This week, we travel back in time to Thunder Road for the 8th Neighbor show of the Thunder Road Residency, taking place 5 years ago today featuring Ricky, Lyle, The Dux, and Mike Miksis on bass.
Tonight, Ricky tells the story behind Whiskey (making its debut at this show), which he wrote while drunk at 4am in his basement. The Dux also settled in for his second show, most notably adding some cowbell on Why I Like You. Stranger Part of Town and Somerville Shuffle also included teases to two not-yet-debuted tracks, Planet Silver and Lonely Rider.
First set highlights include the first 20+ min rendition of Stranger Part of Town and a killer Somerville Shuffle with yet another Allman’s tease. That tease foreshadows an expansive Stand Back to start set 2, followed by the proto “Neighbor 7” that debuted horns renditions of Stomp and Buck Dance, Get Out of My Life Woman, Move Along Little Jimmy, Skin it Back, and Spanish Moon. The encore of Purple Rain capped off the heaviest jam set played by the band thus far.
As seen above, this show was jam packed with rarities, with Down South in New Orleans (#1 of 1), Workin’ Mans Blues (#2 of 6), Stand Back (#2 of 2), Stomp and Buck Dance (#1 of 1), Get Out of My Life Woman (#1 of 1), and Purple Rain (#1 of 1) being played less than 15 times ever.
Guests joined throughout the second set, including Lee Ross on tenor sax, Mark Coronado on trumpet, Alex Budney on bass, and Greg Hall on guitar.
Five songs made their debut tonight, made up of the original Whiskey and covers of Down South in New Orleans (The Band), Stomp and Buck Dance (The Crusaders), Get Out of My Life Woman (Lee Dorsey), and Purple Rain (Prince).
